Christians, can you answer my question??
Can man look at God and live?
In Exodus 33:20 God tells Moses "No man shall see me and live." Today as christians we are perfectly holy according to God so I was wondering, can a born again christian look at God and live???? Also God said to moses "you shall see my back." Why would this not kill him?
Also when Moses was looking at God’s back would he be looking at jesus? Is Jesus the heavenly body form of God aswell? Like in the New Testament when he stood on that mountain talking to elijah etc and the diciples could not recognise him?

Jesus is God!

He Forgive sins 6 times here:
Matthew 9:2,
Matthew 9:6,

Who else but God can forgive sins?

Jesus claims God’s name!
Look at:
Exodus 3:14 (New International Version)
14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ "

Here are 7 times Jesus claims that very same name:

John 8:58
John 10:7
John 10:14
John 11:25
John 14:6
John 15:1

12 times Jesus is listed as being worshiped here:

Matthew 8:2
Matthew 9:18
Matthew 14:33
Matthew 15:25
Matthew 18:26
Matthew 28:9
Matthew 28:17
Luke 24:52
John 4:20
John 9:38
Who else but God is worthy of being worshipped?

If Moses couldn’t look God in the face without dying, why do you think a born again christian could?
As for Moses seeing God’s back, it isn’t the same as looking God in the face, eye to eye.
No, he wouldn’t have been looking at Jesus, since Jesus wasn’t even born yet. Some believe Jesus is the heavenly body form of God and some don’t.
I think the reason his disciples couldn’t recognize him was because of the huge blinding light.

though we are made new again, we still aren’t worthy. so yes you would die. and that is why moses saw only his back. the idea of trinity is also not meant to be understood. we can’t understand it because that is what faith is. we don’t need to understand it. when we go to heaven is when we will become able to understand. it is hard to explain.

I think "you shall see my back" was not translated as closely to what it really said in Hebrew. Sorry i don’t remember what it really should say though.

I think it was he could not see God’s face. but really God is not human and although Jesus was God on earth his face was that of a man not God.

While Moses did see God’s back, he didn’t see God’s face which was what the passage was saying.
As far as Jesus, He didn’t go to earth in the form of a man, just like anybody else, so of course the people of that time could look at Him.
Would have Moses seen Jesus when he looked at God’s back. No, I don’t think so. You see, while Jesus has been around since the beginning of time, I don’t actually believe that He had a physical form until he was born from Mary.

I studied theology and have discussed this with many people.

I have to correct something you’re saying. According to the original Hebrew Bible manuscript it’s looking in God’s FACE that will kill a man, not God’s body. Face and body are 2 different things. In the english Bible, sometimes certain words are not accurately translated from hebrew to english. I know this to be a fact as I actually studied the greek new testament and the hebrew old testament– I’ve seen how inaccurate the english translations can be and how things can be clarified by referring to the original greek and hebrew manuscripts of the Bible– it’s simply true that there are greek/hebrew words that just don’t have any english equivalents.

Here’s what the original hebrew Bible literally says for exodus 33:20:
"And he said thou canst not see my face**: for there shall no man see my face and live".

**The hebrew word that’s used is "pa?n??ym" which means face, not body.

Note how God allowed Moses to see His body, BUT not his face. Hmm, there’s gotta be a difference. I’ll explain further…

The "face" or "pa?n??ym" has a unique significance apart from the "body".

God does not really have a face. When applied to God, the idea of God having a face has to be understood as metaphorical (non-literal) – as are the other references to God’s bodily features implied in the notion that God sees, hears, speaks, reaches out to smiles, smells. These are all anthropomorphisms which are attributions of human forms that have been "projected" onto God.

But the more expansive notion that God has a face suggests a different set of associations. Think of what we experience when we see another person’s face.

First, the face confers identity and certain expression. When we see another person’s face, we are able to see what makes that person different from others. To look a person in the face is also to enter into a sort of non-verbal and emotional relationship with that person. The face and eyes are the portal into the "being-ness" and depth of another person.

Second, the face reflects and expresses one’s feelings. The face carries the smile, grin, laugh, frown, etc which shows whether that person is pleased at us, angry at us, intrigued by us, concerned for us, etc.

The hiding of God’s face as clearly shown in scripture represents God’s absence, the void left by a dramatic break in the relationship with God. That sense of God’s sudden, inexplicable absence from our lives is also familiar to every believer. Even though we are saved, God is still absent from us– we are perfect at being imperfect. God is perfect at being perfect. As long as we have physical bodies, we will be separate from God.

so…
We cannot see God’s face with our physical eyes. To see God’s face would mean that we would have to be nothing but pure spiritual energy, spirits, and absent from our own physical bodies–dead in our physical bodies.

I hope this clarifies things at least a little…

A lot of good questions, James.
1) Scripture actually says that if we see God’s face, we’ll die. And God neither changes, nor is He trapped in the realms of time. So what God said some thousands of years ago about dying if we see His face, still stands today.

2) We don’t really know what Moses was looking at when looking at God’s back. I’m willing to guess that the reference given to the cloud that led them was what they saw.

3) God has 3 parts: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. So Jesus is A form of God, but not the only one in the Heavenly realms. Although, it is believed by many scholars that when the scripture says "The Angel of the Lord" stood before people on earth, it was actually Jesus (or God the Son) who stood before them. I believe what helps support this is not just the Hebrew forms of the words, but also the fact that the people often called the angel, "Lord". When John bowed down to the angel in Revelation, the angel freaked and informed John that he should bow only to God. But we don’t see that in the Old Testament accounts.

4) When Jesus was talking w/Elijah & Moses on the mountain, His disciples saw Him just fine. Remember, Peter asked if they should build tents for each of them.
